Diving with Purpose
The Partnership
In proud partnership with Indo Ocean Project, Blue Planet Dive Village is home to a year-round marine ecology research and conservation program.
Around our dive shop, you'll meet trainee research scientists who are collecting data underwater and coordinating community outreach as part of the program.
This collaboration brings together passionate divers, local communities, and international researchers to protect and understand the incredible marine biodiversity of Bira's waters.

Research in Action
Our team deploys cutting-edge research methods including Baited Remote Underwater Video (BRUV) systems to monitor shark and ray populations in Bira's diverse marine environment.
This non-invasive technique allows us to study species behavior, distribution, and abundance without disturbing their natural habitat.
Turtle Identification
Using photo identification techniques, we track individual sea turtles over time, building a comprehensive database of the local turtle population.
This data helps us understand migration patterns, nesting behaviors, and population health, contributing to global conservation efforts.

Marine Biodiversity
Bira's waters are home to an incredible diversity of marine life, from majestic manta rays to delicate reef fish.
Every dive contributes to our understanding of these ecosystems, and every diver becomes a citizen scientist helping to protect these precious habitats.
About Our Partner
Indo Ocean Project
Indo Ocean Project is a marine conservation organization dedicated to protecting Indonesia's incredible ocean biodiversity through research, education, and community engagement.
Their team of dedicated scientists and volunteers work year-round to monitor marine populations, restore damaged reefs, and empower local communities to become stewards of their marine resources.
Our Impact
- • Year-round research program
- • International internship opportunities
- • Community education initiatives
- • Long-term monitoring projects
Marine Conservation Internship
We host international and local students for a 4 to 8-week Marine Conservation Internship. It is a professional program designed for those looking to start a career in marine biology or conservation.
What You'll Experience:
- •Hands-on fieldwork deploying BRUV systems and conducting surveys
- •Data collection and analysis with professional research protocols
- •Community outreach and environmental education
- •Coral restoration and reef monitoring activities
- •Professional mentorship from experienced marine biologists
